Back to a Galaxy long ago…Star Wars: Dark Droids Review

I've been slowly working my way through more of Marvel's modern Star Wars comics, and Dark Droids was one I'd heard plenty about before finally getting around to reading it. The idea alone sold me: a mysterious corruption spreading through droids across the galaxy, turning trusted companions into deadly enemies. It's a fantastic light-horror concept for Star Wars and something we don't often get to see explored.

So, did it live up to the premise?

Well... yes and no.

Review

I really enjoyed the central concept of this story. A galaxy where droids suddenly become the enemy feels fresh, unsettling, and surprisingly creepy. Star Wars doesn't often lean into horror, so seeing familiar characters unable to trust the machines they've relied on for years immediately raises the tension.

The artwork deserves plenty of credit here too. The corrupted droids look fantastic, managing to be recognisably Star Wars while carrying just enough body horror to make them genuinely unsettling. The action scenes are dynamic, the pacing is quick, and from a visual standpoint there's very little to complain about.

Where Dark Droids loses a little momentum for me is its overall impact.

Throughout the story, I kept waiting for something that would fundamentally change the galaxy or leave a lasting mark on the Star Wars universe. Instead, it feels like another enjoyable adventure that comes and goes without really altering anything. That's become something I've noticed with quite a few modern Star Wars comics. They're fun while you're reading them, but afterwards they don't leave much behind. They weirdly feel like a Saturday morning cartoon, a great distraction but no lingering memory.

That isn't necessarily a criticism of this story alone; it's just where the current comic line seems to sit. There are plenty of nostalgic adventures featuring familiar faces, but very few feel essential or dangerous. One relationship that does shine is Lando and Lobot. Their friendship provides the emotional core of the story and gives the event some genuine heart amongst all the chaos. Without that, I think the series would have felt far more hollow.

As for the collected edition itself, it's exactly what you'd expect from Marvel. A handful of variant covers are included at the back, but there aren't any substantial extras or behind-the-scenes features. That's pretty standard these days, so I wasn't disappointed, but it would have been nice to see a little more.

Final Thoughts

Dark Droids is a fun read with an excellent premise, strong artwork, and some genuinely creepy moments. I don't think it'll be remembered as one of the defining Star Wars stories, but I also don't regret spending time with it. Sometimes it's enough to enjoy a well-crafted adventure, even if it doesn't reshape the galaxy.

If you're a fan of Star Wars comics or enjoy seeing the franchise dip its toes into horror, this is definitely worth picking up. Just don't expect it to change your view of the Star Wars universe forever.
