Movie Review: Weapons (2025) – A Modern Horror That Hooked Me
Every now and then, a film comes along that completely catches you off guard. I first watched Weapons on the flight back from the UK to Canada, and from the opening moments I was hooked. Watching a horror film on a plane probably isn't the ideal environment, but somehow it made the experience even more intense. The creeping sense of dread and suspense had me completely invested, and there were several moments where I genuinely didn't know where the story was heading next. It was also comical to suffer a jump scare while sitting next to a stranger.
What really impressed me was how grounded everything felt. The film takes the idea of a witch and places it into a modern setting without going over the top. It never felt cheesy or relied on endless jump scares. Instead, it slowly builds tension, letting the mystery unfold piece by piece. One of the biggest strengths of Weapons is its storytelling. Multiple characters and seemingly separate storylines gradually weave together until the bigger picture becomes clear. Every time I thought I had worked things out, another piece of the puzzle would slot into place. It's the kind of film that rewards paying attention and keeps you thinking long after the credits roll.
The atmosphere is where the movie really shines. Rather than relying on gore or constant action, it creates an almost unbearable sense of unease. That slow-burning suspense is what makes it so effective, and it's something I always appreciate in horror.
I came away from Weapons genuinely impressed. It's a horror film that trusts its audience, tells an intriguing mystery, and delivers an unsettling experience without needing to throw everything at the screen.
If you're looking for a horror film built around suspense, mystery, and an unsettling atmosphere rather than cheap scares, I'd absolutely recommend giving Weapons a watch. It was one of those films that grabbed me from the start and refused to let go.
