Sector 102 // The Strange Life of Devlin Waugh

Peps here. Mega-City One’s seen mutants, demons, psychic cults, undead Judges, and enough paranormal weirdness to make your average citizen start sleeping with the lights on. But even in a world like this? Nobody quite compares to Devlin Waugh.

Exorcist. Vampire. Occult investigator.

And possibly the most stylish man ever to punch a vampire through a wall.

The Vatican’s Problem Solver

Devlin Waugh used to work for the Vatican. Yeah. That Vatican. When things got too strange, too supernatural, or too horrifying for regular people to handle, Waugh got the call. Haunted possessions, demonic entities, occult conspiracies, if it crawled out of Hell, chances are Devlin crossed paths with it eventually and somehow, despite being openly vampiric himself, the Church still kept him around. Probably because he was very, very good at the job.

Not Your Typical Hero

Here’s the thing about Devlin. He’s not noble, not humble either. The man openly admits he dislikes most people, especially women, and carries himself with the kind of arrogance only someone who’s survived literal Hell can pull off. But underneath all the sarcasm and cruelty? He’s usually the one standing between humanity and complete supernatural catastrophe. Which honestly feels unfairly glamorous.

Tea, Violence, and Vintage Pornography

Devlin’s tastes are… specific. He enjoys the finer things in life: crocket, afternoon tea, expensive comforts, vintage pornography, and long stretches of mocking everyone around him. He also keeps a pet cat named Grendel, which somehow feels completely appropriate. Picture the world’s deadliest occult hunter lounging in silk robes while insulting demons over tea. That’s Devlin Waugh.

The Vampire Advantage

Unlike the ancient monsters hiding in crypts, Devlin’s vampiric nature works a little differently. Thanks to the Lightwalker gene, passed down from the vampiress Lilith, he can function in daylight without turning into ash like traditional vampires. A useful trait, honestly.

Add in enhanced durability, abnormal physical strength, combat training in the deadly Kwem-Kwong martial arts, and enough steroid use to terrify a med-judge, and you end up with a man who can survive things that would pulp normal humans instantly and usually while dressed better than everyone else in the room.

Why People Love Him

Despite appearing less often than some of 2000 AD’s bigger names, Devlin became massively popular for one reason: Nobody else feels remotely like him. He’s flamboyant without apology, cruel but charismatic, terrifying but weirdly funny. One minute he’s discussing occult theory like a scholar, the next he’s smashing a supernatural horror through stained glass while complaining about bad manners. You never really know what version of Devlin you’re getting and that’s part of the fun.

Final Thought from Peps

Most heroes fight monsters, Devlin Waugh feels like someone who belongs with the monsters, but chose humanity anyway. At least most of the time and maybe that’s what makes him fascinating. Because in a world packed with clean-cut heroes and obvious villains, Devlin lives somewhere in the middle: Elegant, dangerous and completely unhinged and somehow still one of the best chances humanity has when the darkness starts creeping in.
