Book Review: Tempest Breaker by Cavan Scott – A High Republic Detour
“The Force binds us… but this script kind of surprised me.”
Hey everyone, welcome back to Adventures with Peps, where we dive into books, battlefields, and blasters and today, we’re taking a trip back to the golden age of the Jedi with Tempest Breaker, part of the ever-expanding Star Wars: The High Republic era.
Excited? So was I! Especially when I discovered this fresh copy in the library. But then... a plot twist not in the book sadly, but in the format.
Expectations vs. Reality
So here's the thing: I picked this up thinking I was getting another rich, High Republic novel packed with Jedi drama, space battles, and that sweet Force-wielding swagger we’ve come to expect. What I got instead? The script for the audio drama. Yup, full dialogue, stage directions, no traditional prose.
Now to be fair, this was my oversight. It’s clearly labeled, but in my eagerness to get more High Republic action (especially anything by Cavan Scott), I didn’t double-check. Lesson learned: always read the fine print in the galaxy far, far away...
What Tempest Breaker Delivers
Disappointment aside, once I adjusted my expectations, I still found it to be an enjoyable ride. This is pure Star Wars audio drama energy, fast-paced, character-driven, and cinematic in scope (if you have the imagination for it).
We see the return of familiar High Republic faces, tense political intrigue, and yes, tempestuous conflict (pun absolutely intended). The script moves quickly, with snappy exchanges and a good rhythm. You can almost hear the voice actors in your head, lightsabers igniting, and blasters firing. That said, without the performances, sound design, and musical score from the audio version, some of the emotional weight and tension doesn’t quite land. It’s like reading a movie script without seeing the film, cool, but not quite the full experience.
Who Should Pick This Up?
If you’re a completionist or love seeing the behind-the-scenes structure of Star Wars storytelling
If you’ve already heard the audio drama and want a companion script to dig into
If you’re into theater or audio plays and like visualizing stories in script form
But...
If you’re expecting a traditional novel with inner thoughts, lush descriptions, and narrative flow, this one might not hit the mark for you.
Final Thoughts
While Tempest Breaker didn’t quite scratch my High Republic novel itch, I can still appreciate it for what it is a fun, fast-moving slice of Jedi action from a writer who clearly loves this galaxy.
Would I have preferred a full-blown novel? Yes.
Did I enjoy it once I accepted the format? Also yes.
Lesson of the day? Always check what kind of book you're buying... even in hyperspace.
Thanks for reading, and may the Force be with you. If you've listened to the audio drama, or read this one too, let me know your thoughts!
