Audio Review // The Harrowing by Rob Sanders

We’re diving back into the grimdark this week, and I have to admit, I’m pretty hyped. Why? Because the Alpha Legion is back in the spotlight, and if there’s one thing you can count on with them, it’s misdirection, betrayal, and chaos.

Whenever the Alpha Legion appears, it’s never a straightforward firefight. It’s a web of lies, operatives, and subtle sabotage, and The Harrowing doesn’t disappoint.

The Harrowing

Series: The Horus Heresy (Short Story)
Author: Rob Sanders
Format: Audio Drama
Available on: Amazon (Audible/Kindle)

The Fluff:

“Death has come to Callistra Mundi.”

The garrison world of Callistra Mundi is under siege — not by a traditional legion assault, but by the Alpha Legion, masters of covert warfare. The story unfolds aboard the Mechanicum ark freighter Omnissiax and its battlegroup, where operatives and turncoats reveal themselves at the worst possible moment.

No one knows who to trust. Confusion reigns. And only when loyalties are completely shattered will the real attack begin.

Review:

Okay, so this was freaking awesome. This short story packs a serious punch and gives us a razor-sharp look at how the Alpha Legion operates. If you’re expecting bolter-on-bolter action from the start, think again. This is psychological warfare, espionage, and sabotage in the deadliest form. The Harrowing tactic is brilliant, a blend of infiltration, misdirection, and good old-fashioned turncoats. Sanders captures the paranoia and tension perfectly. You’re constantly second-guessing everyone on the page, and it’s all the more thrilling for it.

Honestly, it feels less like a traditional Space Marine story and more like a Special Forces operation. Watching the Mechanicum unravel from the inside was deeply satisfying and grimly entertaining. And, of course, it leaves you wanting more. Because with the Alpha Legion, there’s always more: more layers, more secrets, more questions.

Final Thoughts:

If you’re a fan of Alpha Legion intrigue, covert ops in 30k, tense, psychological storytelling and watching entire battle groups collapse from within… Then, The Harrowing is a must-read. Short, sharp, and savage.
