Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1953 drops Big Red into a series of folklore-fueled cases packed with monsters, myths, and just enough dry humour to keep things from getting too grim. If you're wondering whether you need to read Hellboy chronologically, my answer is becoming a very enthusiastic... maybe not.
