Comic Review // Alien vs Predator: Thrill of the Hunt

Okay, okay… I know I’ve been on a bit of an Alien franchise binge lately. What can I say? The library dropped a treasure trove of old comics in my lap, and resistance was futile. I promise a few more and I’ll take a break and head back to the MC-1 universe (Promise… ish.)

This copy of Thrill of the Hunt was clearly well-thumbed, so I figured that was a good sign. But judging by the page count, I knew it was going to be a short ride. Let’s see if it was worth it.

Details:

  • Title: Alien vs. Predator: Thrill of the Hunt

  • Author: Mike Kennedy

  • Illustrator: Roger Robinson

  • Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

  • Type: Graphic Novel

  • Page Count: 96

Commercial Blurb:
Two of cinema’s deadliest monsters clash again in the far future after humanity rediscovers them in the stars. Aliens, Predators, and humans stuck in the middle, what could go wrong?

Review

Hmmm… well. Let’s just say this one didn’t exactly thrill me.

The art feels like it time-travelled straight out of the 1980s, flat line work, dull colours, and nothing particularly exciting on the page. Which is confusing, because this comic was published in 2004. Did the printer get stuck in a time loop?

The story doesn’t fare much better. Imagine a bargain-bin 80s action movie: loud, violent, but with no real substance. The plot barely exists, the characters are so underdeveloped I couldn’t even tell you their names, and the Aliens and Predators… well, they mostly just stand around instead of tearing each other to shreds. Which is, you know, the whole reason I picked this up.

Why are the Yautja and Xenos here? What’s the point of this story? Your guess is as good as mine. Honestly, it felt more like a filler comic than an actual tale.

Final Thoughts

This was a disappointment. I don’t expect high-brow sci-fi from an Alien vs Predator story, but I do expect at least some pulse-pounding hunts and big cinematic clashes. Instead, this was “meh” on paper. Verdict? Skip it. Save yourself 96 pages and go do something more rewarding with your time… like watching paint dry. Trust me, it’ll have more tension.

You’ve been warned.
